Sorrento, Italy

So much to see and do in this area of Italy. If time Naples is worth a night or two!

We caught the train to Sorrento which was just over an hour and very easy. I would say it was busy the day we travelled (we had to stand), run up to Easter week, and goes via Pompeii but for a short time it was not a big deal.

Sorrento is a great base for so much on the Amalfi coast. We managed to visit Pompeii and Mount Versuvisus. There are lots of day trips available. Ideally take a bus, ferry or organised tour as renting a car is not something I would recommend, even in low season the roads are small and narrow, parking is impossible and the local driving is something I have never seen before! Makes London driving look easy...

Once at Sorrento our hotel was beautiful and I would most definitely recommend the Grand Hotel Capriomonte. I would love to go back in slightly warmer weather to maximise the swimming pools, terrace etc.. Such an easy walk into Sorrento town, small little streets, great restaurants, bars and down to the harbour/ferry port. You can catch a ferry to Capri, Positano, back to Naples, Ischia, lots of options and worth looking at the timetables and purchasing your tickets before travel, especially in the high season. We ate dinner in Sorrento each evening and would definitely mention these restaurants: Risorante Bagni Delfino https://www.ristoranteildelfinosorrento.com

Great seafood, homemade pasta, extensive wine list and loved the fact we were sitting on the rocks of the jetty!

Modern trattoria, great local wines, food, seafood, meat and homemade pasta.

Michelin 2025 fish restaurant. Great views and on the harbour jetty.

Raki Gelato, Via S. Cesareo, 48, 80067 Sorrento NA, Italy. The best ice cream we found in Sorrento. Different flavours each day and everyone we tried and tasted (quite a few ) were heavenly!

Walk of the Gods

A major highlight for me, was the Walk of the Gods. I had researched and read many articles about this walk and although we did it on a cloudy day it was still a huge success and wonderful experience.

The "Walk of the Gods," officially known as the "Sentiero degli Dei," is a popular hiking trail along the Amalfi Coast in Italy. The name "Path of the Gods" comes from a legend about the Greek Gods rushing down from their mountain abode to save Ulysses. It was originally used by local farmers and traders. This trail has breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea, rugged cliffs, and picturesque villages, and is considered a must-see for hikers. The path connects mountain villages and is known for its scenic route with spectacular vistas.

It is approximately 8 kilometres but is steep in places and I would say moderately difficult.

Tips for hiking the Path of the Gods:

  • Choose your starting point:

The trail has multiple starting points, with Agerola or Bomerano being common options.

  • Go in the direction of Positano:

Hiking from Bomerano to Positano is generally recommended for a downhill experience with better views.

  • Be prepared for stairs:

The trail includes 1700 steps from Nocelle to Positano, which can be challenging for some.

  • Check the weather:

The trail can be exposed to the sun and wind, so be prepared for changing weather conditions.

  • Wear comfortable shoes:

The trail can be rocky and uneven in some areas, so wear comfortable shoes with good traction.
